“That’s what I’ve been trying to tell you guys!” I protested.

Josh’s girlfriend seemed very unsure. “Wait a second, you’re going to let this zombie touch Josh again? What if something even worse happens?”

“Everything will be fine,” said the lady EMT. “We’ll be right here if something goes wrong!”

Josh’s eyes widened when he heard the word wrong.

The lady EMT nodded at Arnold. “Go for it.”

I crossed my fingers, and I’m pretty sure Kiki and Ross did, too. Azalea just stood there. I think she’d decided she wasn’t going to move until poor Josh could move.

Arnold didn’t seem nervous at all, though. He just calmly walked up to Josh, put his hand on Josh’s shoulder, and squeezed.

And just like that, Josh was fine. He yelled, “YES!” then raised his arms up like he’d just scored the winning touchdown in the Super Bowl. The crowd cheered, which made Josh even more psyched. First he hugged his girlfriend, who was expecting it, and then he hugged Arnold, who wasn’t expecting it. The EMT guys started packing up their gear, and everything looked like it was going to be just fine. Which was when the two policemen showed up.

“We heard there was a Zombie Zing on an innocent bystander,” said the first one.

The second one got out his notebook. “Tell us everything. Start at the beginning.”

But before anyone could say anything, Azalea finally woke up out of her trance. “I did it!” she proclaimed. “I was watching the movie, and the 3-D scared me, and the creature was coming right toward me, and I thought I was being attacked, and I reached out to Zombie Zing him for my own protection, but instead I Zombie Zing’d the poor man sitting in front of me.”

The EMTs looked confused. The guy pointed at Arnold. “I thought you said you did it.”

Now Arnold did look nervous. “I … I was just trying to protect my friend.”

“You don’t need to protect me,” Azalea said. “I don’t belong here, and I never will. I’m starting to think this whole thing was a mistake.”

She looked like she was going to cry, but then I remembered that Arnold told me zombies don’t cry.

I walked over and put my arm around her. “You’re being ridiculous. We love having you here! This was all just a big misunderstanding!”

The police and the EMTs stood there, trying to figure out what to do next. It seemed like everyone was waiting for someone else to do something, since no one had ever dealt with this kind of situation before. Then Josh—the guy who’d asked us to stop talking loudly, and then had been frozen solid for more than fifteen minutes, walked up to Azalea. I cringed—this wasn’t going to be good.

“I totally understand what happened,” he said. “It’s okay. It’s not your fault.”

Azalea blinked. “Really?”

“Really. I was scared by the movie, too.” The guy named Josh, who I’d thought I didn’t like but now liked a lot, turned to the police and EMTs. “We’re all good here, guys.
